Country inn with regional restaurant
Hostellerie Schuddebeurs
Oosterschelde lobster, then a bed among the trees.

From our diary
Dining and staying at Hostellerie Schuddebeurs
We have a soft spot for a proper country inn. A dining room where people have been cooking for a long time, and a room to disappear into afterwards. Schuddebeurs is one of those. It sits in a wooded hamlet on Schouwen-Duiveland, close to Zierikzee, and chef-owner Bart de Bree has cooked here for twenty-five years.
His menu reads like a tour of Zeeland: Oosterschelde lobster, oysters, mussels, and game and asparagus in season. You eat in a room lined with centuries-old tiles, which suits the food remarkably well. Not a kitchen out to surprise you, but one that knows exactly where its produce comes from.
There are 22 rooms, from standard and garden rooms to a historic deluxe room, a suite and a bridal cottage. That last one tells you something: people get married here too. If you like to sleep somewhere sleek and modern, this isn't for you. If you like a classic house in the greenery, all the more so.
Good to know
The rooms have no air conditioning and the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays; worth knowing the first one in a hot summer.
