Dine and stay in Gelderland

Where we dine and sleep in Gelderland

The Veluwe, the river IJssel and the Achterhoek. Gelderland is the land of hunting lodges, castles and estate hotels, with game from its own forests on the table and woodland as a back garden.

In Gelderland the book holds three addresses for now. When we come across more that belong here, they go in. If we had to pick one, it would be Broederenklooster. If you are coming for a star, try De Echoput. The next place is still empty: that is the address we are trying next.

Where the friars once slept, we're very happy to sleep now.

A medieval monastery where they built seven fewer rooms rather than sacrifice the old details. We like that choice, and Niels van Dooijeweert's open kitchen finishes the job.

Kasteel Engelenburg, Brummen

Castle hotel with restaurant and golf course

Brummen · approx. € 420 for two

Staying at a castle where Prince Maurits once spent the night.

An estate of more than fifty hectares with a moat, a golf course and a restaurant built on classic French foundations. We go for the combination: a stroll round the grounds first, then dinner at Judith.

Veluwe game on the table and the forest on the doorstep.

Home to the Klosse family since 1955, deep in the Crown Estate of Het Loo. We go for Wild Atelier, and it's reassuring that there's a bistro too for a quieter evening.
