Castle hotel with restaurant and golf course
Kasteel Engelenburg
Staying at a castle where Prince Maurits once spent the night.

From our diary
Dining and staying at Kasteel Engelenburg
In 1624 Spanish troops destroyed Engelenburg, and by 1641 it was standing again. We admire that sort of stubbornness in a house. Its history goes back to 1570, when Jacob Schimmelpenninck van der Oije became its first resident. Prince Maurits stayed in 1591, and in 1828 Judith van Lennep bought the estate and had it thoroughly rebuilt. Since 1988 it has been a hotel with a restaurant and a golf course in the grounds.
The forty rooms and suites are spread across the Coach House, the Orangery and the Kaapse Huis. At Restaurant Judith, Bas Diepenbroek and Liam Boyle cook on a classic French base with Mediterranean and Northern European influences. That sounds like a kitchen that knows where it comes from and still looks beyond its borders. For golfers it is an easy choice. For us too, mainly because after dinner all you have to do is cross the estate.
Good to know
The rooms are split across three separate buildings on the estate, so check which one you're in when you book.
