Three-star restaurant with boutique hotel
De Librije & Librije's Hotel
Sleeping behind an old cell door after an evening in the courtyard.

From our diary
Dining and staying at De Librije & Librije's Hotel
The Spinhuis in Zwolle used to be the town's women's prison. These days the tables stand in the old courtyard and the rooms sit behind the former cell doors. We rather like that the building hasn't scrubbed away its past. You eat somewhere with a story, and the story carries on all the way to your room.
Jonnie and Thérèse Boer took over De Librije in 1993. Thérèse is still the hostess, with Jimmie and Isabelle Boer alongside her, and Nelson Tanate now runs the kitchen. He works with regional, sustainable produce, which suits a house that has stayed in the same hands for so long. Booking a table here is not booking a casual supper. You know that going in, and it helps that nobody has to drive afterwards. Nineteen rooms and suites around the restaurant, behind the old cell doors. We can't think of a better reason to stay.
Good to know
Nineteen rooms isn't many for a house this well known, so book the room when you book the table.
