Manor house with restaurant and hotel suites
Château De Havixhorst
We do like a house with a wine cellar beneath the floor.

From our diary
Dining and staying at Château De Havixhorst
For almost three centuries this was home to the noble De Vos van Steenwijk family, from 1658 to 1939. De Havixhorst is first mentioned in 1371, and the main house as it stands today dates from 1753. In 1982 the Wijland family opened it as a hotel and restaurant, after restoring it together with the Drentse Landschap trust. Since 2022 the second generation has been in charge: chef Chris Wijland and Fleur Wijland-Holterman.
The cooking is French with a local slant. Fruit and vegetables from the garden, game from the Reest valley, and a wine cellar beneath the house, which we find a reassuring thought. Baroque gardens and a sculpture park surround the house, so leave time for a stroll before you sit down. There are thirteen suites and rooms, from a junior suite to a bridal suite. If you prefer things sleek and modern, you may find it a little stately. We don't.
Good to know
Arrive in good time for the baroque gardens and sculpture park; for us, that walk is part of the visit.
