Grand hotel with two-star restaurant
De L'Europe Amsterdam
A grand hotel on the Amstel whose kitchen skips dairy.

From our diary
Dining and staying at De L'Europe Amsterdam
No dairy. You don't often read that about a restaurant at this level, and it made us curious. At Restaurant Flore, chef Bas van Kranen calls his approach conscious fine dining: he cooks to the Dutch micro-seasons, works with biodynamic suppliers and offers a fully plant-based menu all year round. There's a conviction behind it, and we don't think it needs hiding.
The hotel itself is another matter entirely. De L'Europe opened on 23 September 1896 on the site of Het Rondeel, a defensive tower from 1482 on the Amstel. It has belonged to the Heineken family since the fifties, and Freddy's Bar is named after Freddy Heineken. There are 107 rooms and suites, and in the 't Huys wing some suites were designed with local partners, the Van Gogh Museum among them. Large and stately, yet with a kitchen bold enough to be headstrong. It's a pairing we rarely come across in Amsterdam.
Good to know
Flore cooks without dairy and always has a plant-based menu, so say which menu you'd like when you book.
