From our diary

Dining and staying at Kasteeltje Hattem

A chef who has been in the same kitchen since 2008. That often tells us more than a list of awards. Carlo van Erve cooks French food with a Mediterranean slant, and since 2017 you've been able to eat in a conservatory built onto the house.

Kasteeltje Hattem calls itself the smallest castle in the Netherlands. Its present form dates from 1718, when it was still called Horst te Roerbosch. The town of Roermond bought it in 1954, and in 1962 the park around it was laid out in the English landscape style. Frank Keuten and Daan de Ruiter have owned it since 2004.

You sleep in one of eight suites in the former coach houses, completely renovated in September 2025. Small, then, and we like that. You're not in a hotel with a long corridor, but in a park, a few steps from the table you've just left. If you want grandeur, this is too modest. To us, that's the charm.

Good to know

The restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and with only eight suites it pays to book early.
