Terraced castle with starred restaurant and suites
Château Neercanne
A castle set into the hillside, with the wine kept in the caves.

From our diary
Dining and staying at Château Neercanne
The only terraced castle in the Netherlands. Neercanne was built in 1698 for Baron Daniël Wolf van Dopff, military governor of Maastricht, and has belonged to the Oostwegel Collection since 1984. You dine looking out over the baroque gardens and the Jeker valley, and the wine is kept in the marl caves beneath the house. Frankly, that last part is reason enough for us.
In the kitchen is Robert Levels, who cooks classic French food with vegetables from the castle's own garden. For something more relaxed, there's L'Auberge.
For a long time this was somewhere you had to drive home from. Since 2024 there have been seven suites, and that has made Neercanne a different place for us. A classic, certainly. If you prefer sleek and new, you may find it a touch formal. We happen to love a house that has known how to receive guests for over three centuries.
Good to know
The restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and with only seven suites, rooms go fast.
