Historic village inn with restaurant and guest house
De Herberg van Smallingerland
A log fire and a whirlpool for two. We're easily persuaded.

From our diary
Dining and staying at De Herberg van Smallingerland
Freddy Bult and Aukje Westerhof have run this inn in Rottevalle since 1995. Their son Jurmen now cooks alongside them, having worked at Landgoed Lauswolt, 't Havenmantsje and Kaatje bij de Sluis. Aukje is host and sommelier. The building dates from around 1791, a listed monument that was always the village inn. That village feel is exactly what we'd hope to find there.
The cooking is Frisian and starts with vegetables. There are menus of three to six courses and a Herberg tasting menu for those who want to try everything. You can stay in Teades Plak, and there's only the one guest house: two bedrooms, a sitting room with a fireplace and a bathroom with a whirlpool for two. So it's all yours, or you bring another couple along. We think that's a lovely plan for a birthday. Or just for a Friday.
Good to know
There's just one guest house, for up to four people, so book early if you want to stay; it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
